Control the blade and the space around it.

Use a stable work surface, keep your free hand out of the cut path, and direct each cut away from your body and other people. Take your time whenever opening or closing a folder.

Before you cut

Check the edge, handle, and lock. Do not use a folding knife with a damaged or unreliable lock.

During the cut

Use the right knife for the material. Keep a firm grip and never use a knife as a pry bar or screwdriver.

When closing

Keep fingers out of the blade path, disengage the lock deliberately, and close the blade slowly.

When finished

Close folding knives and sheath fixed blades before carrying or storing them. Keep them away from children.
