D2 vs. 440C: choosing a knife steel
Compare D2 tool steel and 440C stainless steel, understand their care needs, and choose a knife around how you will use it.
Start with your routine
A steel name helps explain a blade, but it does not tell the whole story. Heat treatment, edge geometry, construction and care also affect how a finished knife performs. Choose the actual knife for your task instead of treating a steel label as a guarantee.
D2: wear resistance with attention to moisture
D2 is a high-carbon, high-chromium tool steel known for wear resistance. Carpenter describes its corrosion resistance as mild in the hardened condition. Treat a D2 blade as a knife that still needs prompt drying and routine corrosion protection, particularly after damp outdoor use.
440C: a stainless option
440C is a high-carbon stainless grade. BÖHLER's N695 data identifies 440C as its market grade and describes corrosion-resistant applications. Stainless does not mean maintenance-free: clean and dry the knife after use.
What to check before buying
- Match the blade shape and handle to the cutting job.
- Read the actual item's steel description, dimensions and condition.
- Do not assume a steel marking proves the maker, heat treatment or country of manufacture.
- If you prefer a simple care routine, consider corrosion resistance along with the rest of the knife.
