How to care for a Damascus knife

A practical care routine for Damascus knives: cleaning, drying, protecting the blade and storing it without trapped moisture.

Know the steel beneath the pattern

Damascus describes patterned steel, not one universal alloy. Some Damascus is carbon steel and some is stainless. Damasteel, for example, makes stainless patterned steels. A visible pattern alone cannot establish the alloys or corrosion resistance of an individual knife.

Unless the item's steel is documented as stainless, use a cautious clean, dry and protect routine. Check the maker's instructions when available.

After handling or use

  • Remove residue with a soft cloth and a mild cleaner appropriate for the blade and handle.
  • Avoid prolonged soaking, harsh chemicals and abrasive scrubbing of the decorative finish.
  • Dry the entire knife, including the handle junction and accessible crevices.
  • Apply a thin protective product appropriate for the material and intended use. Follow its label; food-contact use needs a suitable product.

Before storage

Store the knife in a dry place. Make sure any sheath is dry before sheathing the blade; do not put a damp knife away. Inspect periodically rather than assuming an unused knife needs no care.

If rust, a damaged edge or a loose handle appears, stop using the knife and ask for help assessing it. Do not try acid re-etching or aggressive refinishing as routine home maintenance.
